Ten Habits That Stop Lockouts Before They Start

September 16, 2026 4 min read

We are happy to come out late at night — but we would rather you never needed us. After thousands of lockout calls across Lansing, the same handful of causes come up again and again.

Habits that cost you nothing

Check for your keys before the door closes, every single time. Make it a physical pat, not a mental note.

Never leave a spare under the mat, in a fake rock, or on top of the door frame. Those are the first three places anyone looks, and they are checked in seconds.

Give a spare to one trusted neighbour or nearby family member instead. A two-minute walk beats an after-hours call fee.

Small spends with big returns

Fit a keypad deadbolt or a lockbox with a code you actually remember. Codes cannot be left on the kitchen counter.

Put a cheap tracker on your keyring. It will not stop the door closing, but it ends the twenty-minute search that precedes most calls.

Maintenance that prevents the emergency

Deal with a sticking lock immediately. A key that needs jiggling is a key that will eventually snap off in the cylinder, usually in February.

Fix doors that need lifting to lock. That is jamb or hinge movement, and it grinds the bolt every time.

Lubricate cylinders with a dry graphite or PTFE product, never with oil, which collects grit and gums the pins.

Check the storm and screen doors too — a self-latching storm door is a classic way to get locked out of your own porch.

The short version

A spare with a neighbour, a keypad, and fixing a sticky lock early prevent the large majority of the lockouts we attend.
